The Best Spinning Fishing Rod & Reel Combos: Reviews

A man rolling in his fishing reel

When you are a beginning angler, you do not want to spend a fortune on your gear since you are likely to upgrade as your fishing skills advance. Hence, the following list includes some of the best-value spinning rod and reel combos currently available on the market. I am sure you will be able to pick one that will tick all your boxes!

Best On-The-Go Combo: Okuma Voyager Fishing Rod & Reel Combo

Okuma Voyager Spinning Freshwater Travel...
  • Convenient nylon travel bag
  • Shock-resistant foam insert
  • 6-foot rod that can be broken down into 5 pieces for easy transport
  • Durable ceramic guide inserts.
  • 2000 (20) size reel with a single ball bearing drive and 5.0:1 gear ratio

If you are a fisherman on the go, you might want to consider the Okuma Voyager rod and reel setup. It features a full-sized 6-foot rod that can be broken into five pieces small enough to fit in the carry bag that comes with it (which could be a bit more generously padded for extra protection). As a result, this combo is ultra-portable; it even fits the overhead compartments in airplanes.

Unlike many travel kits, this setup is rather versatile and can be used to catch various fish. The rod itself is made from sturdy composite material. It is medium-light to medium power and moderate action and can handle some serious action. I’ve used it for bottom fishing with live bait and was quite pleased with its performance.

The reel is a slight disappointment in comparison to the rod. At size 2000 and rated for a 4 to 8-pound test line, it is a rather small-sized reel more appropriate for a light power rod. On the bright side, the Voyager reel is made from a durable, corrosion-resistant graphite frame and anodized aluminum spool. Most importantly, it delivers smooth performance and can cater to left-handed and right-handed anglers.

I like the comfortable cork handle and convenient adjustable shoulder strap, too. Both are rather handy after a few hours on the water. You also receive a handy tackle box to pack your essential bait, hooks, and split shots.

Pros

  • Ultra-portable combo ideal for fishermen who travel a lot
  • More versatile than many other travel kits
  • Strong and sturdy rod
  • Smooth-performing reel

Cons

  • Plastic anti-reverse
  • Reel size more suitable for light power fishing rods

Best Rough Use Combo: Okuma ROX Fishing Rod & Reel Combo

Sale
Okuma ROX Spinning Combo (Medium),...
  • Graphite composite rod blank construction, 2BB bearing drive for smoothness, Multi-disc oil felt drag washers
  • Durable Dura-flow stainless steel guides, Comfortable EVA foam fore grips, Neo-cork rear split grips for reduced weight
  • Sturdy graphite composite rod blank
  • Rust-resistant stainless steel guides
  • A two-ball-bearing reel with multidisc oil-felt drag washers and machined aluminum spool (Gear ratio is 5.0:1 for the 7-foot, and 5.1:1 for the 6.5 and 8-foot models)

If you want a rod and reel combo that can withstand a good fight and come out as a winner, try the Okuma Rox spinning setup. In my experience, the 7-foot model with medium action performs great when battling an aggressive steelhead or hefty salmon. You can even use it to target marine fish, as long as you clean the reel bearings well afterward.

The great combo of a sturdy graphite blank and a comfy and secure EVA foam handle enables you to fight larger fish without feeling fatigued. The reel is also made to withstand a good fight, from its durable construction and rigid aluminum handle to the multidisc oil-felt drag washers. Even the spool is built for rough use. In short, this combo seems to have no weak spots.

The price and quality ratio are pretty awesome too. My only complaint is the poor quality of the line pre-spooled onto the reel. It should best be replaced right away. The reel is a bit on the heavier side too, but it casts smoothly and rather far, so I guess it can be overlooked.

Pros

  • Built to withstand rough use and feisty fish
  • Sturdy graphite blank offers plenty of sensitivity to feel subtle bites
  • Smoot-casting reel
  • Reasonable price

Cons

  • Quality of the pre-spooled fishing line
  • A bit heavy reel

If you live near the ocean or the sea, or you simply like to switch between saltwater and freshwater fishing, the Sougayilang Spinning combo is right up your alley. It features a sturdy blank made from the 30-ton carbon matrix material.

There are two available rod lengths: 5.9 feet and 6.9 feet. Both versions are fast action, but you can choose between medium and medium-heavy power depending on your needs. No matter which model you choose, you will have a versatile 2-piece rod for targeting a variety of fish, including trout, bass, walleye, catfish, salmon, and multiple marine species.

The reel features a comfy and powerful large ball handle knob, 12+1 ball bearings, and a rear drag function. The anti-slip rod handle seems sturdy and does not absorb any water. The rod comes with a practical hook keeper, which you will appreciate if you are anything like me and constantly misplacing your hooks.

  • Comes with a 1-year warranty for worry-free usage

Cons

  • The eye-catching bright color might not be everyone’s cup of tea

Shakespeare’s Ugly Stik GX2 combo is tough and durable thanks to its fiberglass/graphite blank and machined double anodized aluminum spool with an oversized bail. The guides made from stainless steel are made to last a lifetime too. They can withstand even the toughest fights.

There are different models in terms of rod length, weight, and power. Therefore, you can find one that meets your needs and preferences. Kids and female anglers can find a perfect combo too. The shorter, heavier action rods come in one piece, while longer, faster action models can be broken into two parts to be transported more easily.

The EVA foam handle is slim and comfortable. It does get dirty quite quickly, but that is nothing little cleaning can’t solve. I have seen better reels, but considering the price of this combo, the included reel has the acceptable capacity, decent drag, and satisfactory performance.

In short, the Ugly Stik GX2 combo is packed with value. If you are a newbie or a hobbyist searching for a dependable rod and reel combo at a decent price – go for it!

Pros

  • Inexpensive all-around combo
  • Offers plenty of sensitivity
  • Features improved guides for extra durability

The KastKing Centron combo is the best fishing rod and reel combo you can get for your money. That is why it is popular among not only beginners but more experienced anglers too.

The rod blank is made from lightweight fiberglass and delivers plenty of backbone to conquer big fish. According to some reviews, the rod tip is rather sensitive, so you might want to treat it with extra care to save it from breaking.

There are five different rod lengths to choose from (6 to 8 feet). All rods are two-piece and feature secure and comfortable EVA handles suitable for all-day fishing (split rear or full length, depending on the mode). The blank is packed with plenty of stainless steel guides too. They all feature premium O-ring inserts and can be combined with both monofilament lines or braid.

This great combo includes a well-respected reel from the Centron series with quite an impressive performance, especially considering its pocket-friendly price. Reels are available in several sizes from 2000 up to 5000 to match all the rod lengths.

You can find faster reels, but at this price point, a 5.2:1 or 4.5:1 gear ratio is great. Centron reels also feature an aluminum spool, triple-disc drag system, 9+1 Maxi-Dur ball bearings, and an anti-twist line roller.

Pros

  • The best price, performance, and quality ratio
  • Suitable for freshwater and inshore saltwater fishing
  • Travel-friendly
  • Incredibly smooth reel with a reliable drag
  • Protected by KastKing’s Total Peace of Mind policy

Why Buy A Spinning Rod & Reel Combo?

A stone with a question mark

The main reason to buy a rod and reel combo is to avoid wondering whether your fishing rod and reel can handle the same line strength & diameter or the weight of the lure. Ready-made rod and reel combos are matches made in heaven – just pick the one that suits your needs, and you are good to go!

Buying a spinning reel combo brings more benefits, especially when you make the right choice. After all, spinning reels are renowned for their ease of use and versatility.

Unlike baitcasting reels, spinning reels are beginner friendly and do not require a steep learning curve. As a result, you can avoid losing precious time trying to figure out how to use a technically-complex reel and immediately concentrate on improving your fishing skills.

Moreover, when it comes to casting an ultra-lightweight lure, spinning reel combos are far more efficient than any baitcasting reel. Therefore, get a spinning combo if you prefer casting small and light lures and want to eliminate backlashes. It can even be used for fly fishing when you are missing a proper fly fishing rod.

One more advantage of a spinning fishing rod and reel combo is that you can use it with any fishing line. You can pair it up with a monofilament, fluorocarbon, or braided line and switch between them as you wish.

Most of the time, fishing rod and reel combos cost less than a setup you would assemble. Hence, they allow you to familiarize yourself with using spinning reels and fishing rods without breaking the bank.

Once you up your skills and learn more about fishing gear, you can step up to high-end reels and fishing rods to secure the best possible performance, or move on to a baitcasting setup or fly fishing rod.

What To Consider When Buying Spinning Fishing Rod & Reel Combo?

Lined up fishing rods with golden fishing reels

Many reel and rod combos are all-in-one solutions that work in various fishing scenarios, even for fly fishing. Some are made especially for kids or newbies.

Even though buying a fishing rod and reel combo takes a lot of the guesswork out of getting ready for your fishing adventures, it does not mean that there are no things to consider. You still have to make some choices in terms of rod length, power, action, or reel setup. There are also some important questions to answer, such as:

  • What fish species do you plan to target?
  • How experienced are you?
  • How much are you willing to spend?
  • Do you prefer freshwater or saltwater fishing?

Let’s dig into it a bit deeper!

Types Of Fish You Plan To Target

A pile of fish

Catching fish is the ultimate goal of every angler. However, you have to prepare adequately if hoping to catch fast, aggressive, or big fish.

When targeting overly aggressive fish species, you should best opt for a fast-action rod as it bends on the top and is less likely to break during the fight. If you want to start slowly and target smaller, less aggressive fish, a slow action rod (bending at the bottom) is the best choice.

When targeting fast fish, bring a medium-action rod. It enables you to work with various bait configurations and improves your casting distance. Besides rod action, the type of fish you target dictates your rod’s power, too. There will be more info on that subject later on.

For now, it is enough for you to remember that the lighter the rod, the smaller the fish you can catch with it. Hence, ultralight and light rods are reserved for smaller fish, while medium-heavy and heavy rods are best suited for surf fishing and targeting large freshwater or saltwater species.

In my experience, medium-light and medium rods are the golden mean as they are the most versatile option. They are strong enough to handle bigger fish and sensitive enough to feel the small bites. Your choice of prey dictates the rod length too. Shorter rods are better for fighting aggressive fish species, while longer rods are more versatile and allow for greater casting distance.

Finally, your spinning reel’s line weight (measured in pounds and usually marked on its surface) must match the average weight of the fish you are targeting.

Your Level Of Experience & Fishing Style

You can have the best spinning gear available, but it will be all in vain if you do not know how to use it. Therefore, it’s of little use, if any, to invest in high-end, super-expensive equipment before you master fishing basics.

In my humble opinion, beginners should start by purchasing an intro-level combo and use it until they get acquainted with all the nits and grits of fishing. It will give them time to discover what they like about this sport and what fishing style they prefer, too. After all, what’s the point in investing in a spinning or baitcasting rod when there is a good chance you’ll grow to love fly fishing and require a fly rod and fly line instead?

The same goes for you. Once you are experienced enough, you’ll develop both style and gear preferences. Your knowledge will enable you to choose the best rod and reel – and you’ll know how to use it properly too!

Price & Quality Ratio

As I have just established, there is no need to spend a fortune on your rod and reel. You can find a decent combo for as low as $30 or $40. Of course, investing in quality is never bad. Often, a few extra bucks can buy you a more durable or more sensitive rod.

Cheap reels typically come with lower-quality drag systems made of felt or low-grade carbon fiber that is likely to disintegrate rather quickly. Many lack preventative sealing, which keeps saltwater and grit from entering and damaging the mechanical parts.

When I was purchasing my first combo, I took the advice of a more experienced angler and invested around $100. That bought me a reel with an all-metal body and a semi-sealed drag system which allowed me to target an occasional saltwater fish without worrying about corrosion.

Fishing Environment

A man casting his fishing rod

Do you prefer a saltwater or freshwater fishing environment? Your answer to this question will dictate what combo to buy. Saltwater combos are made to withstand harsh surf and offshore fishing conditions but tend to be more expensive than freshwater combos

Most rods are clearly categorized as freshwater, fly fishing, or saltwater, so choosing the one that suits the environment you plan to fish in should be easy. Some rods are even versatile enough to be used in saltwater and freshwater. If you want to do some fly fishing, chances are you’ll have to purchase a specific fly rod and reel combo.

The Most Important Fishing Rod Features In A Spinning Rod And Reel Combo

Power

Fishing rod power infographics

As I have already mentioned,  the power of a rod shows how much force is needed to bend it. It depends on the material from which the rod is made and the rod length (the shorter, the stiffer). In terms of power, rods can be:

Ultralight

They are highly sensitive and exciting to use. As these rods allow you to feel even the smallest bite, they are ideal for targeting panfish species, such as perch, bluegill, or sunfish, but can also be used for catching trout. More experienced anglers might even catch a smallmouth or largemouth bass. Yet, bigger fish are hard to control and reel in.

Ultralight rods are commonly paired with small spinning reels and a 2 to 8-pound fishing line. You should use them with small, light lures, too.

Light

They are a better choice for newbies as they give more control when you fight fish. You can use them to target panfish, trout, and smallmouth bass!

These rods call for smaller spinning reels and a 4 to 8-pound line. Your lure should weigh between 1/32 and ¼ ounces

Medium-Light

As I already stated, medium-light rods are the gold mean and the most versatile. They enable you to fish a variety of fishing techniques and target all sorts of fish species, including perch, bluegill, crappie, trout, largemouth bass, or even walleye (although I would leave that to more experienced anglers).

A medium-light rod is typically paired with a light or medium-sized spinning reel, while line weights range from 4 to 10 pounds. You should opt for a lure weighing from 1/16 to 5/16 ounces.

Medium

Medium-power rods can be used in both freshwater and saltwater environments. They are strong enough to handle bigger, stronger fish, especially if they are shorter and made of fiberglass.

Therefore, these rods can be used for inshore fishing, trolling, surf fishing, and bass fishing (using crank baits and jerk baits).  You can target any species weighing up to 20 pounds, including walleye, striped bass, largemouth bass, red drum, tunas, sailfish, wahoos, or even a shark.

These rods go with medium-sized spinning reels and line weights from 6 to 12 pounds. You should use lures weighing between ¼ and ¾ ounces.

Medium-Heavy

Medium-heavy rods are powerful enough to tackle monster fish, especially if made of fiberglass. They are the ideal choice when your fishing technique calls for a firm hookset (for example, when fishing soft plastics).

They are suitable for both inshore and offshore fishing, and surf casting. You can use a medium-heavy rod to target species such as largemouth bass, lake trout, pike, steelhead, rays, and even big sharks. Your line should weigh 10 to 20 pounds, and you should cast lures weighing at least ⅜ of an ounce.

Heavy

If you want to reel in a trophy sea monster, you must take out your biggest guns. When it comes to fishing, there is no more powerful weapon than a heavy rod. It is designed to tackle even the largest and meanest fish.

Rod length plays an important part here, though. A shorter rod is ideal for targeting saltwater species such as grouper, shark, and tarpon, and freshwater fish such as lake trout and giant pike. A longer heavy rod is best used by bass anglers when flipping or pitching.

Action

Fishing rod actions infographics

The rod’s action shows where your rod will bend when under pressure. Fast-action rods are very stiff and thus bend only near their tip, while slow-action rods bend much closer to their handle. In terms of action, rods can be:

Extra-Fast & Fast

Extra-fast and fast rods are stiff and do not bend much under pressure. Hence, they offer enhanced sensitivity at the rod tip and secure a more successful hookset.

Moderate-Fast

These rods are a bit more flexible. They allow for some cushioning and prevent the hook from getting snatched out of a fish’s mouth.

Moderate

These rods bend more than half their length, making them tough enough to fight big and aggressive fish. They might not be ideal for soft plastic baits but are more than suitable for treble-hooked lures.

Slow

These rods can bend almost throughout their length. They are an ideal match for crankbaits.

Guides

A man holding his fishing rod patiently waiting for a catch

Guides protect your fishing line from the damage caused by friction and evenly distribute the stress your rod has to endure. The more, the merrier. The bare minimum is one guide per every foot of the blank, plus one more (the only exceptions are fly rods and surfcasting rods).

Guide material and quality play a crucial role in the overall quality of the rod and reel combo, especially if you opt for more powerful setups. They need to be corrosion-resistant, well-secured, and strong enough to handle ample abuse. I personally prefer stainless steel guides.

Blank Material

Contemporary fishing rods are made from carbon fiber, fiberglass, or graphite. Some have so-called composite construction, which means multiple materials have been used.

Carbon Fiber

Carbon fiber rods are stiff and strong, but not heavy at all. However, these rods are rather sensitive and can be easily damaged if not treated with care. They are very pricey, too!

Fiberglass

Fiberglass rods are not as modern as their carbon fiber relatives but are still very popular. A fiberglass rod is typically heavier and very tough but can be quite flexible as well

Graphite

Graphite spinning rods are strong, stiff, and lightweight. They are highly sensitive, too, allowing you to feel even the subtlest bites. Unfortunately, graphite is brittle and breaks easily.

Composites

Composite rods are usually built to bring you the best of two worlds. For example, there are rods with strong and stiff graphite cores, wrapped in more flexible fiberglass.

Length

Rod length is very important. The longer your rod is, the further you’ll be able to cast your bait. On the other hand, shorter rods deliver better casting accuracy. If you want to balance casting distance and precision, opt for a rod length of 6-foot-6-inches to 7 feet.

Handle

Close up shot of a fishing reel

Rod handles are made from either cork or EVA foam. Former is a natural material that feels warm to the touch. It is soft enough to feel comfortable, yet firm enough to guarantee a secure grip.

On the other hand, EVA foam is a synthetic material that is softer and cooler to the touch. It is also less expensive and more durable than cork.

The Most Important Spinning Reel Features To Understand When Buying A Spinning Rod & Reel Combo

Drag

The first thing you should check when assessing a reel is the location of the drag system. Ideally, the drag knobs ought to be placed at the end of the spool. If the dials are located elsewhere, they won’t work as well or be as durable.

Next, check whether the maximum setting matches the size and weight of the fish you are targeting. You can also test the drag with a weight, to determine how well it can hold.

Gear Ratio

Gear ratio tells you how many times a spool turns at one turn of the crank. If the gear ratio is 6:1, one turn of the handle spins the spool six times. Why is that important?

The higher the gear ratio, the faster you can retrieve your bait. However, some bait and lures work best with a fast reel, while others work better with medium or slow reels. Therefore, you up your performance by matching your reel’s gear ratio to its intended use.

Gear ratio also informs you how quickly a reel can pick up the line. When trying to cover a lot of water or jigging in deep water, you should best choose a reel with a medium-to-fast gear ratio.

Smooth Operation

A smooth operating reel that spins freely and has a bail that closes firmly can make a significant difference on the water. Ideally, the anti-reverse system should lock up quickly too.

Capacity

Fishing rod mounted somewhere while waiting to catch fish

High line capacity enables you to spend a whole day fishing without re-spooling your reel. Do mind that having a large spool means you’ll have a bigger reel, too.

Weight

A reel should not overweight the rod. It should sit comfortably in your hand.

FAQs

Are rod and reel combos any good?

Rod and reel combos are a good choice for inexperienced anglers. They eliminate the need to match a rod and reel on your own, which can be challenging for a beginner angler.

Do you need a spinning rod for a spinning reel?

You need a spinning rod for a spinning reel. The two are designed to go together. Combining a spinning reel and a casting rod, or vice versa would mean sacrificing casting distance or even compromising your equipment.

What size reel do I need for a 7 foot rod?

You need a small size reel (1000 – 3500) for a 7 foot rod. This combo is best for catching smaller freshwater fish weighing up to 15 pounds. You will also need a mono line in a 2 to 10-pound range or a braid in a 4 to 14-pound range.

What size reel do I need for a 10 foot rod?

You need a large-size reel (6000 – 30000) for a 10 foot rod. This combo is excellent for surf fishing and offshore boat fishing. You can use it to catch marine monsters weighing 150 pounds or more. You must have a 12-60lb mono line or a 24-100lb braided line.

Is it better to have more or less bearings in a fishing reel?

It is better to have more bearings in a fishing reel. The more bearings your reel has, the smoother it will be, so buy a reel with as many bearings as possible. Of course, you must make sure that all the bearings are properly placed and of high quality.

Are 1 piece or 2 piece rods better?

2 piece rods are better for beginners since there is less risk of them getting damaged or breaking. They are also a great choice for fishermen on the go as they can be packed up and carried around much easier than 1-piece rods.

Spinning Rod & Reel Combos – The Final Countdown

A trophy for the best fishing rod

The best fishing rod and reel combo is the one that works best for you. As I have already said, for me, the winner of this roundup is the mighty yet affordable KastKing Centron Fishing Rod and Reel Combo. I must admit, though, that it was a close call since I really like the powerful and versatile Sougayilang Fishing Rod And Reel Combo too.

I would advise you to narrow your choice to two or three combos from the list and try them out before you make your final decision. If you have any questions, you know where to find me.

  3. In my opinion, the Ugly Stick should be the go to rod for anyone considering getting into any decent kind of fishing. It’s a versatile rod, but to be honest, I can’t speak much for the reel that you’ve mentioned. The rod however is high quality and will last a long time, as long as it’s well taken care of. I’ve caught lots of fish on mine, from trout to bass to perch and seabass. There’s a reason it’s been a staple to fishermen for so many years!
